Withholding and Withdrawing Treatment from Patients in a Vegetative or Minimally Conscious State

We are pleased to welcome as our Keynote Speaker Mr Justice (Sir Jonathan) Baker of the High Court Family Division who has presided over a number of highly influential cases in the Court of Protection and will reflect on his judgment in the first case of withdrawal relating to a patient diagnosed as ‘minimally conscious’: W v M and Ors [2011] EWHC 2443 (Fam). The Journal of Medical Ethics has published a number of articles discussing this judgment, which was also widely covered in the media.

There will also be talks from a range of experts covering the ethical, clinical, philosophical, economic, and sociological perspectives of withdrawing treatment from vegetative and minimally conscious patients.

  • Professor Jenny Kitzinger, Director of the Cardiff Chronic Disorders of Consciousness Research Centre, University of Cardiff

    An application is pending for accreditation from the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board. Established practising solicitors and barristers will be able to count this towards their unaccredited CPD allowance.
