The seminar this year has been designed to appeal to civil and family, as well as criminal practitioners.

10.00am - 11.15am:

FORENSIC DNA PROFILING [Including An Introduction To DNA 17]

Dr Philip Avenell, [Principal Biologist, Forensic Access] specialises in DNA profiling, body fluids and blood pattern analysis. 

He will:

-    discuss current DNA profiling techniques

-    explain what the introduction of the new profiling system, DNA 17, means [introduced July 2014]

-    examine how the new DNA kits will impact on statements and court reports

-    highlight issues faced in recent cases


11.15am - 11.30am Coffee Break


11.30 am - 1.00pm

DIGITAL AND SOCIAL MEDIA FORENSICS

Shelina Jilani [Acume Forensics] is a specialist in facial mapping and image comparison.

She will explain how digital/social media forensic experts can verify facts, spot fakes and accurately report on social media material. Verification work can be put to use in criminal, civil and private family matters.  Shelina will discuss what analysis can be undertaken and work through recent case studies.

THE REALITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF PATHOLOGY

Dr Sebastian Lucas

Former Professor of Pathology, Dept of Histopathology, Guys and St Thomas Hospitals and Kings College London

Professor Lucas is a leading expert on the proper conduct of autopsies, and a range of matters as diverse as maternal deaths, Aids and tropical diseases.  He will speak about the realities and limitations of pathology.
