The North Eastern Circuit has a long and proud tradition of championing equality, diversity and inclusion within the legal profession.

The Diversity Hub builds on that work by bringing together barristers, judges, regulators (including the Bar Council and the Inns of Court), universities, schools and third-sector organisations to share knowledge, support good practice, and drive meaningful change across the Circuit and beyond.

Developed in association with the School of Law at the University of Leeds, the Diversity Hub is both a showcase of the NEC’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and a practical resource for practitioners, chambers and those aspiring to a career at the Bar. Through outreach, mentoring, training and an evolving online platform, the Hub aims to broaden access to the profession, support career progression, and embed long-term, sustainable approaches to equality, diversity and inclusion within the North Eastern Circuit, whilst contributing to wider good practice across the profession.

Equality and Diversity officers

The North Eastern Circuit’s Equality and Diversity Officers provide leadership on equality, diversity and inclusion across the Circuit, supporting efforts to foster fair, inclusive and supportive professional environments. The role involves advising on EDI-related policy and practice, supporting members of the Circuit and chambers, contributing to training and awareness-raising activities, and working closely with national bodies, educational partners and third-sector organisations. As part of the Diversity Hub, the Equality and Diversity Officers help to shape strategic priorities, promote collaboration and share good practice, ensuring that EDI remains embedded within the Circuit’s structures and culture.
