A few months ago I put myself forward as a “candidate” to become Leader of the North Eastern Circuit. Winning the election was an incredible moment. I am so grateful for each and every vote.
In addition, there were a number of people who encouraged my candidacy and helped convince people to vote for me. You know who you are and I will be forever in your debt.
Last but by no means least, I would also like to thank my predecessor, Jason Pitter KC, for all the work he did on our behalf over the last 3 years.
My manifesto ended with the following: “… members of this Circuit come first. If that is what you want, then what I need from you is your vote. Repose in me that confidence and this Circuit will go from strength to strength”.
Today is my first in office and what challenges we face, but I wanted to reassure you that I relish the challenge in delivering on those promises.
I am hitting the ground running and there have been some changes in committees and a wider cohort of people will be involved across the board. I will be setting this out for you in the coming weeks and if ever there was a time where we as a circuit need to show our collective mettle then this is it. We have a wealth of experience, huge depth of knowledge and tenacity.
There are difficult times ahead including, but not limited to, the Government’s assault on the right to trial by jury. That as you know is a major headline, but we must not forget the wider debate on access to Justice. We can be a part of shaping this for the future. We collectively can present real and effective change.
There are going to be key dates to watch out for over the coming weeks, please keep an eye out for them, some of the updates will be provided by video update, but all dates and “next steps” will be published. We have a great team of people already engaging and driving us forwards.
I hope this message reaches each of you having had a much needed rest over the Christmas period and so let us together face the challenges of 2026 and ensure the North Eastern Circuit does indeed go from strength to strength and we have an even greater 150 years.
Happy New Year!
Caroline Goodwin KC
